When one is pregnant, even small things matter a lot and even the slightest of queries is a big one. Many pregnant women have doubts as to what should not be done or what should be done during pregnancy. Dr. Y S Nandanwar, gynecologist, HOD, Sion hospital answers these doubts.

1. Can you use pain relief ointments, gel or sprays during pregnancy?

It is better to avoid pain relief ointments/ gel/ spray during pregnancy. During early pregnancy, you should not use these pain relief ointments whereas during late pregnancy, you may use them but try to avoid. Dr. Nandanwar suggests that usually if you experience back ache during pregnancy then it is due to calcium deficiency so intake of calcium is very important. 2. Is it safe to use acne creams during pregnancy?

Though it is safe to use acne creams during pregnancy but actually acne and pregnancy does not go side by side.

3. Can you continue using treatments for hair fall or dandruff during pregnancy?

Do not use treatments for hair fall or dandruff during pregnancy. Generally steroids like cortico steroids are given for treating hair fall and most of them should not be taken during early pregnancy.

4. How can you prevent diarrhea during pregnancy?

Infection is the main cause of diarrhea. During pregnancy, there is an acute desire to eat something and many-a-times, women tend to eat something unhygienic or unhealthy. Like if you go out to have a glass of juice, it costs Rs. 20, whereas the original cost of the fruit is Rs. 35, which is more. So you can guess that there is something artificial added and imagine the compromise done in the quality of the juice. To prevent diarrhea during pregnancy, stay cautious, eat healthy, drink clean potable water and take care of your hygiene. 5. Can you start exercising or walking during pregnancy?

You should not start something new like walking or exercising during pregnancy. If you already go to a gym or exercise then you can continue to do so but make sure you only do light exercises and that too under expert advice.

6. Is it all right to use things like vaporub, perfumes or ether during pregnancy?

Things like vaporub, perfumes and ether have chemicals in them and so they should be avoided. The food that is cooked in kitchen generally causes salivation but depending on the duration of pregnancy, it can cause nausea.
