Pregnancy may not be the same for everyone. Some may be lucky to walk through it without major discomfort while a few may have a tough time with morning sickness and various pains and aches during each trimester. There are some pains that are considered common during pregnancy. However, the intensity and type of pain may require discussing it with your doctor to avoid complications. Dr Rajat Singh, consultant gynaecologist, K.D Hospital shares with us a list of aches and pains associated with pregnancy and when you should seek a doctor s assistance.
Headaches
The early days of pregnancy are accompanied by headaches and feeling of nausea and fatigue, also referred to as morning sickness. Hormonal changes, changing blood pressure, dehydration or stress can be the major reasons for these headaches, but this is common during the first trimester. If you continue to experience severe and frequent headaches in the second and third trimester, you must discuss this with your OBGYN. Here are ways to combat headaches during pregnancy.
Abdominal aches
Abdominal pain due to bloating or constipation is very common during pregnancy. Slight pain in the lower abdomen at the beginning of the third trimester is also common. The baby puts excess weight on the ligaments, causing the pain. However, if you observe severe abdominal pains or spot bleeding, you must rush to the doctor. A severe abdominal pain can also mean an ectopic pregnancy, a miscarriage or placental abruption. Do not ignore such pains. Leg cramps
As you progress to the 6th month, leg cramps start troubling you. Cramps are usually experienced at night and may disturb your sleep cycle. Lack of exercise, weight gain and incorrect posture are the causes of leg pain and cramps. Since the sciatic nerve is pressed by the uterus, you may experience leg cramps when sitting for too long or getting up from a chair. While these do not pose a threat, you may want to consult the doctor in case they are severe. Here s how the 6th month of your pregnancy will be.
Bleeding gums
The hormonal changes also affect the oral health of a woman during pregnancy. The gums become excessively sensitive, which leads to bleeding while brushing. Bleeding gums often leads to toothaches too. Practicing proper oral hygiene is a must. Visit a dentist and address the problem at the earliest. Read more on how gums are affected during pregnancy.
Heartburn
The bulging of the belly tends to push the stomach upwards, which is the cause of heartburn and discomfort due to indigestion. Skipping meals or staying hungry can also lead to heartburn. Since you cannot pop antacids without consulting your obstetrician, you must take care to avoid it. Here are 9 ways to deal with heartburn during pregnancy.
Lower back pain
Sedentary lifestyle, wrong posture and lack of exercise or physical activity result in lower back pain during the initial months of pregnancy. As the baby grows, the bulging uterus and weight leads to pressure on the back, causing back pain. Every pregnant woman goes through it. Consult your doctor and engage in light exercises. Try to correct your posture to avoid further damage and severe aches or discomfort. Try these tips to deal with 7 common pregnancy problems.
