In India, drinking Kesar-milk or Kesar-doodh during pregnancy is a norm. Well, milk and Kesar do have their own benefits and gives both the mother and child a boost in terms of nutrition. But in most Indian families it is believed that drinking Kesar-milk during pregnancy can make the child fair skinned. In a country where we are obsessed with fair skin, it is not unnatural for most mothers to buy this theory. Even if some mothers refuse to go by this theory the elders in the family will make sure that she gets her glassful of Kesar-milk without fail to produce fair offspring. Here are five reasons to add kesar in your diet.
During my pregnancy, I did not fall for this myth. Yes, it is a myth. But I also know many would-be-mums will still be forced to drink Kesar-milk to birth fair babies. Know if it is really necessary to drink milk during pregnancy.
So, I spoke to Dr Bhavi Mody from Holistic Health with Dr Bhavi, Mumbai, to clear this myth. Here is what she has to say, Drinking Kesar-milk during pregnancy is an excellent idea. But if you are drinking it only so that your baby is born fair skinned, it is not going to help. Milk gives you the required calcium and protein that is going to do you a whole lot of good. Kesar also helps in reducing cholesterol in mothers, boosts memory, improves heart health and does a lot of other good. But no matter what, it isn t associated with imparting skin colour to your baby. Remember, the colour of your baby s skin depends on a lot of genetic factors your genes, your partner s genes and that of the grandparents. Any kind of food cannot make your child fair or dark. So, if you want to drink Kesar milk to just impart a fair complexion to your child this won t help.
Now, you have this myth cleared from an expert. If you still want to have Kesar-milk during pregnancy do so as it helps to up your calcium and protein intake but not with an intention to give birth to a fair-skinned baby.
