My friend just had a C-section delivery, and I was terrified to see her in a lot of pain. I do have plans for the foreseeable future so thought I should know beforehand what to expect in a C-section delivery. So I spoke to gynaecologist Dr Anindita Dhar to know what to expect after a day, a week and month after a C-section delivery.

After a day

  • You will not be able to move the day after the C-section delivery. If you have taken an epidural for the procedure, your activity will be limited. You should regain mobility by 2-3 days.
  • You can be in a lot of pain depending on your general health before the surgery. You will be given pain medications every four to eight hours depending on your discomfort. It depends on whether or not you were in labour or whether or not it was a planned C-section or one that was done in an emergency.
  • You can also expect to sweat and urinate a lot 48 hours after your C-section delivery. It is because you are given a lot of fluids during C-section. Here are ways to have a mother-friendly C-section.
  • You will bleed even if you do not experience labour. You can expect heavy bleeding in the first three days after delivery. This is because your body has to expel the extra blood it needed to nourish the baby in your womb.
  • You will be constipated, and it could take you quite a few days to get your bowel movements regular. Once you start walking, you will be able to resolve this issue with ease.

After a week

  • Most doctors prefer to wean you off painkillers after a week so be ready to feel pain and discomfort still.
  • You will not be able to do any strenuous exercise or household chores even a week after delivery. Your activity levels will depend on how quickly you are healing after the surgery. You must avoid these mistakes after a C-section.
  • You may suffer from loss of appetite even after a week after surgery. As you will be healing from C-section, your bowel movements will still be irritated.
  • Shortly, within 10-12 days after the surgery, you will have to visit a practitioner to get your dressing, tape and staples removed. Here are 12 causes for a caesarian section.

After a month

  • Even after a month of the C-section delivery, you may experience numbness in the incision area. It may, in fact, stay for a few months but goes away with time.
  • Don t be shocked if you continue to bleed six months after surgery. However, if the flow is heavy, you might just want to visit your gynaecologist.
  • This one should be good news for you as one month later you should be back to your regular self. Although you can suffer from pain and discomfort, doing kegel exercises will help develop your core strength.
