Yes. Like all other medicines, even birth control pills have their own benefits and risks. Some minor side-effects of taking the pills include headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, digestive problems and mood swings. These side-effects do not last for long-period of time. But some of the rare, serious side-effects include:

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Unexplained, unusual bleeding
  • Heaviness in the chest
  • Dark coloured urine
  • Skin rashes

If you experience any of these, you should visit a doctor immediately.

Apart from side-effects studies have linked birth control pills with potential health risks. Some researchers believe birth control pills can increase the risk of breast cancer and cervical cancer. There are several studies that have explored the link between use of birth control pills and the risk of heart disease. One of the studies has found a dose dependant increase in the risk of heart attack and stroke in women with the use of oral contraceptives.

So, it’s always better to consult a doctor if you thing you are taking the pill to often.
