Important diagnostic tests for miscarriage If a woman had to face more than two miscarriages or spontaneous abortions it can make a dent in a her desire to get pregnant. 'But the need is to make sure about the reason that comes in the way of a healthy pregnancy. If one has faced abortions that weren't planned then consultation with a doctor before planning the next pregnancy becomes imperative. Some series of diagnostic tests can help one get to the core of the problem and prepare the doctor to advice accordingly for the same,' says Dr Ganpat Sawant, consultant gynecologist, Kohinoor Hospital, Mumbai.

Here are some tests that are carried out to ascertain the cause of a spontaneous abortion or miscarriage in a woman:

A 3D sonography: It's important to first carry out a 3D sonography in case you have faced a spontaneous abortion or miscarriage at least twice. 'This will help the doctor to get an idea about the health of your uterus, indicate a problem if there is any, and look for an anomaly that could probably come in the way of a successful pregnancy. A detailed report will help the doctor chart out how to help you conceive and take the pregnancy forward,' says Dr Sawant.

Hysteroscopy: Hysteroscopy gives a detailed view of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes on a computer screen to learn more about the cause of a spontaneous abortion or miscarriage. It is done using a hysteroscope - a thin, lighted tube that is inserted into the vagina to examine the cervix and inside of the uterus. 'This helps the doctor to view the uterine cavity from inside to check for fibroids, abnormal bleeding, septa or infections that come in the way of a healthy pregnancy. Treatment is then advised depending on the type of problem or anomaly that is seen during the test,' says Dr Sawant.

Blood tests: A series of blood tests is done to check on hormonal imbalances and chromosomal abnormalities. At times this test can be done on both parents to make sure of the reason for the unfortunate miscarriage. 'Blood tests also help to determine if there is a clotting problem in the mother to make sure that drugs are started so that the problem doesn't interfere with a smooth pregnancy progression,' says Dr Sawant.

A total health check-up: If you know that you suffer from a health condition that could be a potential risk factor interfering conception, get treated accordingly. Else opt for a total health check-up to get a sneak-peek of your health status. Talk to your doctor about the requisite steps needed to take in order to do so. 'Keep your BP and sugar levels in check, take medications to control thyroid problem or any other endocrinological problems that can pose a threat to your pregnancy. A healthy body can only give the fetus a good environment to grow and thrive,' says Dr Sawant.

Luteal phase detect or LPD: An endometrial biopsy is used to determine if the lining of the uterus is adequately prepared to sustain a pregnancy. If the test turns in your favour but the progesterone levels are low then injections or medication are given to up the levels of progesterone to increase the chances of having a healthy pregnancy,' says Dr Sawant.

Once you are started on the treatment after a detailed health check, follow your doctor's advice to the core to ensure you get pregnant and sail through it without much troubles.
