World Organ Donation Day
To make people aware about the importance of donating organs, World Organ Donation Day is observed every year on August 13 across the globe. The is also observed to encourage people to become organ donors and save lives. There is scarcity of organs worldwide, but the situation is far worst in India, as compared to other nations. The country’s organ donation rate is estimated to be below 1 per million population (pmp). In comparison, Spain’s organ donation rate is 50 pmp, while it is 36 pmp in the US. In India, nearly five lakh people reportedly suffer from organ failure every year, but most of them die due to lack of organ donors. One of the main reasons for low organ donation rate is lack of awareness among the public, which also leads to believing in misconceptions.
