Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs): These are organic chemicals used in manufacturing industries. Farm raised salmon is considered as one of the most concentrated food contaminants. Moreover, environmental PCBs are mainly found in fish which are macerated and used as a food source for the salmon, causing bioaccumulation of the toxin. Notably, PCBs impair fetal brain development and cause cancer.
Pesticides: Major sources of pesticide for humans are bug spray, commercially produced meat products, and conventionally grown produce like vegetables and fruits. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 90 per cent of fungicides, 60 per cent of herbicides, and 30 per cent of insecticides are carcinogenic. Moreover, these can cause miscarriage, nerve damage, parkinson’s disease, nutrient malabsorption, and birth defects.
Heavy metals: Widespread in the environment, heavy metals including lead, mercury, aluminium, arsenic, and cadmium are the main reasons to be concerned about. These can readily build up in soft body tissue and can cause diseases and conditions like alzheimer’s disease, neurological disorders, nausea and vomiting, impaired cognitive thought, fatigue, abnormal heart rhythm, blood vessel damage, reduced production of red and white blood cells, and cancer. Some of the major sources of these harmful metals are certain fish, seafoods, vaccines, pesticides, aluminium cookware, dental amalgams and many more.
Traditional holiday desserts include apple crumble, pecan pie, gulab jamun, baklava, Christmas pudding, and Kaju katli, all of which are high in sugar. To reduce your intake, try seasonal sliced fruit platters, such as sliced oranges dusted with cinnamon, baked fruit with warm spices and yoghurt, dried fruits and nuts, or natural honey in place of processed sugars in your recipes.
Artificial Flavorings: These days, artificial flavoring and coloring chemicals are commonly used in the food products. Therefore, your exposure to these chemicals is almost unavoidable. These are mainly used in coffee, cheeses, juices, snacks, prepared and processed foods. Notably, alpha-diketone and diacetyl are two known chemicals used in artificial flavouring and can cause respiratory problems, trigger fibrosis, increased cancer risks, hypersensitivity, and thyroid dysfunction.
