Fallopian tube problems are the cause of 30 per cent of infertility in couples all over the world. Fallopian tube function is vital in a natural spontaneous or Ovulation Induction or Intrauterine Insemination conception.
The tube picks up the egg after ovulation, transports it to the centre of the tube, guides the sperm towards the egg and facilitates fertilisation. After fertilisation, it pushes the embryo into the uterine cavity at the right time for implantation and conception.
It is enough for conception because each fallopian tube functions independently. For example, if the right ovary ovulates one egg, the right tube picks it up and holds it in the centre of the tube, and the left fallopian tube remains inert at that juncture.
Some women are rarely born without one fallopian tube, which is called congenital absence. For a few, one tube might have been removed due to previous ectopic pregnancy or might be removed along with ovarian cyst removal.
One tube might be blocked due to previous surgeries, adhesions or anatomical disruption due to sexually transmitted infections, inflammations and adhesions (band-like fibrous tissue) due to endometriosis.
It can be done to check the patency and abnormality of the tubes. Depending upon the severity of these problems, the condition of the other tube is categorized.
But if the conditions affect the whole pelvic cavity, there is a chance of both being blocked or swollen(hydrosalpinx) or nonfunctional.
In vitro-fertilisation will play wonders for the couple to achieve their baby's dreams. Mild tubal issues can heal due to the healing properties of the progesterone hormone produced by the placenta.
Therefore many women conceive naturally after having one IVF baby. So couples need to understand the problem and act accordingly.
