There are currently no particular antiviral medications approved for RSV or HMPV. However, RSV prophylaxis is available for high-risk newborns, such as palivizumab, a monoclonal antibody administered monthly during the RSV season. This intervention may lower the chance of severe disease but is not a cure. No corresponding preventative or therapeutic alternative for HMPV indicates a serious gap in clinical care.
Prevention remains the cornerstone of controlling RSV and HMPV, particularly in the absence of vaccinations or specific antiviral medications. Key preventive strategies include frequent handwashing with soap and water.
Cleaning and disinfecting regularly touched surfaces; limiting exposure to sick people, especially newborns and immunocompromised individuals; and promoting respiratory hygiene, including concealing coughs and sneezes.
Fortunately, RSV vaccine development is progressing, with promising candidates in late-stage clinical studies. Once available, these vaccines could drastically reduce RSV-related hospitalizations, especially among vulnerable groups.
RSV and HMPV are responsible for a high burden of respiratory diseases worldwide. RSV is well-known for causing high infant hospitalization rates, whereas HMPV's impact is sometimes underestimated, particularly in older adults and immunocompromised patients. Together, these viruses emphasize the significance of ongoing surveillance and research to diagnose better, treat, and prevent respiratory diseases.
RSV and HMPV are closely related respiratory viruses with clinical characteristics but different epidemiology and demographic patterns. RSV poses a significant concern to early infants, whereas HMPV affects a broader population, including older children and adults. Clinicians must recognize these infections early and provide supportive treatment to manage them properly. Until then, preventive measures and public health awareness are our most effective instruments for combatting these infections.
