Pregnancy diet

The pregnancy period is all about healthy eating, boosting immunity and prioritising health. Every mother-to-be needs to include certain foods in her diet to nourish her own health, as well as the health of the baby. According to obstetrician-gynecologist Dr Shalini Verma, there are seven 'amazing superfoods' that can pack the nutrients that a mother and baby need to thrive. "With these superfoods on your plate, you are well on your way to nurturing a healthy pregnancy and a thriving baby," she said. Scroll down to find out.

Tender coconut water

It is important to drink tender coconut water in pregnancy for hydration. The doctor said in an Instagram post that it is also a good source of protein that can reduce cramps, acidity and bloating. It can improve amniotic fluid levels and promote the baby's growth.

Eggs

Make sure that you get a daily dose of eggs. Eggs are rich in protein, calcium and choline. Choline, in particular, can support brain and spinal cord development of the baby; protein can help with growth.

Plenty of fruits

Calling fruits 'nature's candy', the doctor explained that you can mix two servings of seasonal fruits like berries, kiwi, watermelon, etc., with a banana and a vitamin C-rich fruit like orange or guava for a steady dose of wholesome nutrients. Fruits are antioxidants and can boost energy.

Beet juice

Vegetables that are rich in folic acid can help with the development of the baby's spinal cord and reduce the possibility of birth defects. They are also packed with antioxidants to fight off infections. Beet juice can also regulate your blood sugar, the doctor said.

Green leafy veggies

It is also important to stock up on leafy greens and green vegetables in general. According to the doctor, spinach, kale and broccoli are great sources of folic acid, iron and vitamins. During pregnancy, they can also relieve constipation issues and control unhealthy weight gain.

Dairy

Consume plenty of milk, yogurt and cheese to build the bones of the baby and to improve your own bone health. These foods also pack a protein punch and may help to lower the risk of preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

Nuts and seeds

Finally, consume nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, apricots, raisins, etc., which are packed with healthy fats, iron, fibre and vitamins A and C. They can also keep your blood sugar levels stable. Also consider eating chia and pumpkin seeds as they are loaded with omega-3s that can help with the brain development of the baby.
