What Is Acne?

Acne is a common skin problem that affects men, women, and children. Some people, however, are more susceptible to it. According to the Mayo Clinic, acne happens when the hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells that lead to blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.

What Causes Acne?

According to nutritionist Nmami Agarwal, sugar and dairy may be the main culprits when it comes to acne breakout. Some food items cause inflammation. Agarwal explained in an Instagram post that inflammation occurs when the body's immune system is 'activated'. "While it is helpful for fighting off infection, chronic low-grade inflammation can contribute to various issues, including acne," she stated. Also Read - Struggling with Cystic acne? Damaged Sebum

The nutritionist explained that sebum is an oily substance that is produced by the glands to keep the skin hydrated. Inflammation, however, can damage it, making the sebum 'thicker' and 'stickier', and leading to acne.

Clogged Pores

As mentioned earlier, acne is a result of clogging of the pores on the skin. "Thicker sebum, along with dead skin cells, can easily clog your pores, creating the perfect environment for acne-causing bacteria to thrive," said Agarwal. Also Read - Hair Oiling Vs Acne: What's The Real Connection Between The Two?
