Brian fog

Brain fog is a common condition that affects everyone at times particularly during challenging periods in life. It is not a medical condition but a term to describe the symptoms of poor concentration, forgetfulness, mental fatigue and difficulty thinking. Healthcare professionals note that brain fog can be triggered by several reasons such as stress, poor diet, sleep deprivation and dehydration. A study published in Nature Reviews Neurology recommends living a healthy lifestyle for optimizing cognitive function and minimizing brain fog. Check out these six tips for clearing your mind and improving focus:

Stay hydrated

Dehydration can impact attention, memory and mood even if it is mild. Therefore consume plenty of water throughout the day even when you are not thirsty.

Prioritise quality sleep

Your brain heals and puts things into place during sleep so adults require 7 to 9 hours of good sleep each night. Ensure having a regular sleep schedule to enhance focus and decrease tiredness during the day.

Try to be active at least once a day

Exercise helps increase blood flow to the brain and enhances memory and learning. The World Health Organization (WHO) says 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a week is the minimum amount of activity needed. Even a moderate 20 to 30 minute stroll will help to enhance alertness.

Don’t ignore persistent brain fog

Always seek medical help immediately if brain fog lasts for weeks accompanied by severe headaches, confusion, dizziness or memory loss. Healthcare professionals note that if symptoms of brain fog last longer then it may be due to thyroid disorders, vitamin B12 deficiency, anaemia or depression which may require assessment.

Manage stress before it starts to control you

Chronic stress raises cortisol levels making it difficult to focus and remember. Try practicing deep breathing, meditation, yoga or spending some time outdoors to calm your mind and restore focus when you experience brain fog.

Eat brain friendly foods

Brain health is promoted by a balanced diet that is high in omega-3 fatty acids, leafy greens, berries, nuts, eggs and whole grains. Do not overdepend on sugary foods and ultra processed foods as they can lead to energy crashes and increase brain fog.
