Sofia Vergara Was Diagnosed With Thyroid Cancer

Modern Family star Sofia Vergara was diagnosed with thyroid cancer aged 28, the actor recently revealed while hosting an event. The 49-year-old actor also shared her experiences with thyroid cancer during a Stand Up To Cancer telethon held on Saturday August 21. She recalled: “At 28 years old during a doctor’s visit, my doctor felt a lump in my neck. They did a lot of tests and told me finally that I had thyroid cancer.” When she heard the word ‘cancer’ at that young age, she was left in shock, but she “tried not to panic and decided to get educated.” Vergara added, “I read every book and found out everything I could about it.” The actor feels very fortunate that her cancer was detected early, which helped her in her journey to overcoming the disease. sNow Vergara is urging people to get regular screening and to educate themselves about thyroid cancer symptoms.


Signs And Symptoms Of Thyroid Cancer

According to experts, thyroid cancer is more common in women than in men, and mostly diagnosed in people in their 30s and those over the age of 60. A family history of thyroid cancer, obesity, exposure to radiation are some factors that can increase a person’s risk of developing thyroid cancer. A Lump In The Neck

A painless lump or swelling that can be felt through the skin on your neck. The is the most common symptom of cancer of the thyroid. However, only one in 20 neck lumps are cancer.


Unexplained Hoarseness

Changes to your voice, including increasing hoarseness that hat lasts for more than a few weeks. The thyroid gland sits just below the larynx (voice box). Difficulty Swallowing

A developing thyroid cancer may put pressure on the trachea and esophagus, making breathing or swallowing difficult.
