Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a depressive state which is triggered during specific seasons. It may happen during summers or winters. Although winter SAD is more common, new studies suggest that summer SAD is also rising these days.

Insomnia

People affected by SAD may suffer from insomnia. During winters, our body is very less exposed to sunlight. Some countries don't even have sun rays for months. This can have a direct impact on the circadian clock causing insomnia.

Mood Swings

Mood swings is a classic symptom of SAD. The depressive state may last for a long time for some people while for others it may be short or constantly fluctuating.

Low Energy

Due to less sun and light exposure, our body will produce less amounts of melatonin. Melatonin not only helps us sleep but also boosts energy. Reduction in this hormone can lead to fatigue.

Low Motivation

People battling seasonal depression will feel very less motivated to do any work. Some people might also lose interest in fun activities.

Social Isolation

Depression is a complicated mental health condition and most of the patients try to cope with it by isolating themselves. Same thing can happen with SAD. People rarely feel like being around people.
