During pregnancy, a woman experiences many kinds of pains as her body changes to accommodate the growing baby. While pain in the lower back is common, another area that gets affected is near the ribs and just below the bra line.
According to Dr Shalini Verma, an obstetrician and gynecologist, pain below the bra line is pretty normal. She took to Instagram to explain that this common pregnancy symptom is usually seen in the second or third trimester. As the uterus expands, the breasts get bigger and it puts pressure on the diaphragm, stretching the ribs and causing discomfort. Read on to find out how doing the following five things can help.
The doctor suggested wearing comfortable and loose-fitted bras and clothes to avoid pressure on the ribs.
According to the doctor, a pregnant woman must take a warm bath in a tub, and use a hot water bottle for relief. Or she can massage the area with an analgesic gel to reduce inflammation.
Maintain a proper posture to get relief from pain and discomfort. For instance, you can use a propped-up position while sleeping by using pillows. Use a birthing ball instead of sitting on a chair or couch to reduce pressure on the ribs, the doctor said.
The doctor also recommended wearing a belly support band, which can help redistribute the weight around the growing belly, and avoid putting pressure on the ribs.
Finally, consider doing prenatal yoga. Prenatal yoga along with segmental breathing exercises can help relax your muscles and reduce pain. But remember to do it with the help of a yoga trainer or physiotherapist.
