Weight Management

Obesity is increasingly growing in India with children and adolescents falling prey to it. And if left uncontrolled, overweight kids carry a significant risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other lifestyle conditions. Ms Lalitha Subramanyam, Chief Nutritionist at Grow Fit, shares a few tips on how parents can manage weight in children.

Nutrient Deficiency

Calcium, vitamin D and protein are essential for normal bone growth in children. Lack of these nutrients may lead to a low bone density, which may affect bone health in later life.

Set Realistic Goals

Set realistic goals for your child: Believe it or not, setting realistic goals can motivate your kid to stay healthy and fit. The more attainable the goal is, the more likely is the child to stick to it. If you kid is overweight, set realistic and achievable lifestyle modifications so that your child transitions smoothly into a weight loss program. Also Read - World Thyroid Day 2023: Untreated Thyroid Problems Among The Elderly Population Can Lead To Cardiovascular Diseases

Kid Cycling

Encourage exercising: This can be achieved by finding out what physical activities appeal to your child. Go for outdoor games and family outings to encourage your kids. At home, engage them in small household chores and advice them to use stairs often. Getting you kid to exercise with you or taking up cycling together is a good way to imbibe this habit in your kid.

Kid Watching TV

Avoid digital disturbances: Keep digital disturbances away from them at night, especially when eating. As a whole family, discourage eating in front of the television, computer or other electronic devices. Make sure your kid spends most of the time playing outdoors than spending time watching TV or computer.
