Follow The COVID-Safety Protocols

WHO Chief said that attending marriage functions and parties during the Christmas and New Year, where several people are together under the same roof can be deadly as it can give chance to the virus to transmit from one individual to many in no time. WHO also asked people to follow other safety protocols such as wearing proper face masks, keeping their hands clean, checking their symptoms, etc.  Also Read - Blood in stool: What is rectal bleeding? Omicron Spreads Faster Than Delta

Talking about the two most dangerous variants of coronavirus, Delta and Omicron, WHO said that the new strain is capable of spreading faster than the previous strain Delta. “Omicron is highly transmissible than Delta variant. It may cause mild symptoms but the rate of infection due to this variant can be more compared to the Delta variant,” WHO said in a statement.

Do Not Underestimate Omicron

There is no place for leniency, WHO warned looking at the sudden spike in daily cases of the deadly coronavirus in South Africa. According to the latest reports, since the discovery of the variant in South Africa and Botswana was announced on Nov. 25, hospitalization rates in South Africa have risen. Omicron carries 50 mutations in its spike protein which enables it to evade the vaccine immunity easily.  Also Read - Thirst for sugary drinks may come at a cost to brain health: Study

Re-Infection Risk Is More With Omicron

Studies have confirmed that the highly mutated version of coronavirus - Omicron has better potential to infect even those who are fully vaccinated, thus making it difficult for everyone to stay safe with just getting the jab. However, WHO has confirmed that vaccination may not protect an individual from catching the infection, but it reduces down the severity level of the infection and the requirement for hospitalisation. Chances of death due to the virus is also very low for those who are vaccinated.
