The COVID-19 subvariant JN.1 is described as a descendant of the Omicron BA.2.86 (Pirola) subvariant. It has recently emerged as a cause for concern due to increasing infections in certain regions.
Limited data is available on the severity of illness caused by JN.1, with some reports suggesting that it might present similar symptoms to other Omicron subvariants, including fever, cough, sore throat, and fatigue.
People with underlying medical conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or chronic respiratory illnesses and immunocompromised individuals are at a risk of severe infections. JN.1 has been detected in several countries, including the US, China, and India. While its prevalence varies across regions, it is increasing in some areas.
"Regardless of the specific variant circulating, a few measures can reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection and associated severe illness. Staying up-to-date with vaccinations and boosters may protect against death from COVID-19," says Consultant Interventional Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine, Dr Viswesvaran Balasubramanian, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.
Wearing a well-fitting mask, especially in indoor settings or crowded areas, and maintaining a safe distance from others, significantly when unmasked or in poorly ventilated spaces, may help mitigate the spread of infection. Practising frequent hand washing or sanitization, staying home when sick, and getting tested for infection can minimise the spread of viral infection.
