What is Nautapa?

As Nautapa period grips several parts of India with scorching heatwave health experts are urging people to take additional precautions when stepping outdoors. Nautapa is known for bringing some of the hottest days of the year causing dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Dr. Amit Prakash Singh, Consultant of Internal Medicine at the CK Birla Hospitals Delhi states ignoring any unusual symptoms such as dizziness, headache, undue thirst and fatigue can cause severe heat-related illness. Here are some safety tips approved by the doctor to to stay safe during Nautapa season:

Avoid direct sunlight and stay hydrated

Avoid getting exposed to direct sunlight typically between 11 am and 4 pm. The doctor says that it is best to avoid going out during these hours to minimize the risk of heatstroke. Dr. Singh recommends drinking water even when it is not urgent to help you to replenish lost electrolytes and prevents dehydration. Infants and elderly people are at higher risk for heat-related complications. Make sure they are hydrated and do not have to do unnecessary outside activity. Simple precautions can go a long way during Nautapa which is why always listen to your body and stay cool to avoid any summer heat casualties.

Eat light meals

Consuming heavy and oily meals in hot weather may cause indigestion. According to healthcare professionals, you can indulge in seasonal fruits like watermelon, cucumber, muskmelon etc which have high water content.

Apply sunscreen

The doctor also recommends applying sunscreen with SPF 30 or above to provide protection against damaging UV rays. Use it more often particularly if you are sweating heavily outside.

Wear breathable clothes

Wear light and loose fitting cotton garments as they can assist the body to maintain its temperature. The doctor adds, "Dark and tight-fitting clothes trap heat which can cause discomfort." The key is to cover yourself properly from direct sunlight and avoid wearing thick and dark colour clothings.

Watch out for heatstroke symptoms

The doctor also notes that symptoms of confusion, nausea, fast heart rate, fainting and high body temperature should never be ignored.
