Skin Cancer Risk

Cases of melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer, are rising globally. It begins in the melanocytes (cells that control the pigment in the skin). Overexposure to sunlight is known to be the main cause of melanoma. In some cases, genetic factors also play a role, with about 10 per cent of cases having a family history of the disease. Although it's a serious skin cancer, melanoma is curable if caught early. So, let’s find out who are more prone to developing skin cancer.

Reasons Why Wealthy People Have A Higher Risk Of Melanoma

According to the study, factors that make higher-income individuals more prone to developing melanoma include more lifetime sunburns, use of tanning beds, more vacations in sunny climates and recreational tanning. Outdoor workers are also at a higher risk of developing skin cancer.

Why Skin Cancers Are More Common In Men Than In Women?

This is because women practice more sun protection compared to men and they have less sun exposure, said the researchers. Men have more lifetime sunburns, occupational and recreational sun exposure and yet they are more skeptical of using sunscreen. Moreover, women are also more concerned about new moles and were more likely to seek medical advice.  Also Read - Fatima Sana Shaikh's Fitness: The actress' diet and workout will inspire you to get a toned body

Effective Ways To Prevent Skin Cancer

Applying sunscreen is one of the best ways to prevent skin cancer. Many countries have removed sales tax on sunscreen to promote their use. Wearing long-sleeve shirts is another way to reduce sun exposure. Limiting recreational sun exposure and tanning bed use may also help reduce your risk of melanoma and other skin cancers.
