How To Prevent Kidney Stones

One of the common lifestyle diseases across age groups is kidney stones. When oxalate and calcium get concentrated in the urine for a long period of time, they can form crystals, which can lead to kidney failure. In the long run, these crystals develop and become kidney stones. Stones can block the urine flow and that can lead to a number of discomforting symptoms including excruciating pain. Explaining about the common causes for kidney stones, Dr. Priyank Salecha, Urologist, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Hyderabad, said, “People who have had kidney stones are at risk of acquiring them again, making it a likely cause. A few other causes of kidney stones are being overweight, eating a diet high in sodium, history of intestinal surgeries, polycystic kidney disorder and family history of kidney stones.” Dr. Salecha also suggested a few lifestyle changes that could help prevent kidney stones:

Observe The Sodium Intake

A diet that is high in salt will increase the risk of kidney stones as excess sodium in urine causes the blood to absorb calcium from the urine. This increases the level of calcium in the urine and the chances of kidney stones as well. Try to avoid processed food and include fresh vegetables in your diet to keep the sodium levels in check.
