Serum Institute's Covishield was the first Covid-19 vaccines approved of use in India, which started its vaccination drive in January 16 this year. In clinical trials, the vaccine was found to have an efficacy rate of 70%, which can be scaled up to 91% when both doses are administered 8-12 weeks apart. A joint study undertaken by scientists of CSIR-Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB) and doctors at AIG Hospitals, revealed that both Covishield and Covaxin are effective in preventing disease severity and mortality against the Delta variant in fully vaccinated hospitalised patients.
The indigenous COVID-19 vaccine is developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) - National Institute of Virology (NIV). It is also a 2-dose vaccination regimen given 28 days apart. “COVAXIN demonstrated 77.8% vaccine efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19 disease. The efficacy against severe symptomatic COVID-19 disease is shown to be 93.4%. The efficacy data demonstrates 63.6% protection against asymptomatic COVID-19,” the company said. It has proven to neutralize the variants - Alpha, Gamma, Zeta, Kappa, Beta as well as Delta. “Efficacy data demonstrates 65.2% protection against the SARS-CoV-2, B.1.617.2 Delta variant,” the company added.
In April 2021, India approved the use of Russian Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine too. Developed by Moscow's Gamaleya Institute, Sputnik V has proven 91.6% effective against COVID-19. A study has shown that vaccination with Sputnik V produced protective neutralizing titers against Delta and other variants of SARS-CoV-2. The research paper was published in a leading international journal on July 12, 2021.
India in June approved the import of US pharmaceutical major Moderna’s mRNA technology-based coronavirus disease (Covid-19) vaccine to the country. Indian company Cipla Ltd had applied to the Drugs Controller General of India for grant of approval to import the vaccine on behalf of Moderna. Recently, Moderna said that its COVID-19 vaccine is 93 percent effective through six months after the second dose, but a third shot may be needed to protect against new variants of the virus.
