Menstrual health refers to a state of well-being with timely cycles, adequate flow of blood and without a lot of pain and discomfort. For a lot of people, however, delayed periods -- accompanied by cramping and light flow -- are common. Experts suggest making lifestyle changes to deal with these preventable problems. It includes exercises, sleeping on time and getting quality sleep, along with eating clean and healthy meals that are rich in nutrients. A food item that is heavily recommended is jaggery.

What is jaggery?

According to Science Direct, jaggery is a rich source of minerals, proteins, and vitamins. These nutrients form the 'essential constituents' of a healthy diet. In contrast with white processed sugar, jaggery contains a 'robust quantity' of iron and copper percentage, and the 'liberal vitamin content' makes it a 'superior class of natural sweeteners'. It is also considered to be a blood-purifying agent and an energy food that regulates body functions.

Iron boost

Jaggery is loaded with iron, which is like fuel for your body during the menstrual cycle. Iron helps replenish the blood you lose during menstruation, preventing that ‘run-down’ feeling and keeping your energy levels up, the expert said, adding that it also helps those who suffer from scanty periods.

Cramp relief

With jaggery, you can safely say goodbye to pesky cramps. Jaggery contains certain minerals like magnesium and potassium that help relax the uterine muscles, easing dreaded period pains.

Happy hormones

Jaggery works like a mood booster by stimulating the release of serotonin in the brain, which is your body’s natural ‘feel-good’ hormone. Whenever you are feeling a bit low during your period, reach out for some jaggery to lift your spirits.

For digestion

Bloating and constipation are common during periods. Jaggery can help with digestion and keeps the tummy happy, thereby preventing bloating.

How to incorporate jaggery into your diet?

The nutritionist suggested incorporating it into your diet in the form of jaggery candies, sweets, or by simply adding it to your favourite foods. The best time to eat jaggery would be four-five days before your periods till day-four. Eat it in small quantities with ajwain (carom water) or any way you prefer.
