Insomnia

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that is characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. The condition causes day sleepiness and the chronic feeling of not having rested much. There are many factors that can cause the condition. The types can differ in how they affect individuals and the duration and time at which they might occur.

Acute Insomnia

Short-term or acute insomnia is the most common type. It is usually a brief episode of difficult sleeping. As the word acute suggests, it might happen suddenly due to some external or internal event such as a stressful event like the loss of a loved one, a change of place, jet lag, a medical diagnosis, a major job or relationship change and other fast changes. Chronic Insomnia

Chronic insomnia is long-term trouble with sleeping. It could last for at least three nights per week for more than three weeks. It could be a result of many causes for instance long-lasting stressful events, bad lifestyle choices, poor time management, poor sleep hygiene, medical illnesses like hyperthyroidism, anxiety, diabetes and others. It can also be due to some medications or a bed partner.

Sleep maintenance insomnia might happen when a person has difficulty staying asleep all through the night. They might get up at least once in the night and then find it hard to get back to sleep. Many people affected by this kind of insomnia might also worry too much about not being able to sleep and these thoughts might further make sleeping hard for them.
