The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest the following schedule for the vaccine:

People who get their first dosage before age 15 should follow a two-dose regimen.

In a two-dose series, the second dose should be administered 6–12 months after the first (0, 6–12-month schedule).

The minimal time between the first and second doses is five months.

If the double dosage is given at a shorter interval, the third dose should be given at least five months after the first dose and at least 12 weeks after the second.

People who receive their first dosage on or after their 15th birthday and those with specific immunocompromising disorders should follow a three-dose regimen.

In a three-dose series, the second dose should be administered 1-2 months after the first, and the final dose should be administered six months after the first (0, 1–2, 6-month schedule).

Here, the vaccine doses do not need to be repeated if the immunisation schedule is disrupted (no maximum interval).

It’s worth reiterating that the HPV vaccination can only prevent infection; it cannot eliminate the virus once it has entered the body.

Because the viruses are so common, it’s best if youngsters are immunised before they turn sexually active.
