Breast cancer occurs when there is an abnormal change in the DNA of the cell leading to its uncontrolled growth. These cells can mutate and spread to other body parts as well if breast cancer is left unchecked or untreated. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cancer death among women after lung cancer.
Appearance of a lump in the breast is the most common sign of breast cancer. This breast lump is generally irregular shaped, hard and thick surface that usually causes no pain. They can also turn red or pinkish when the skin above the lump thickens. Note, not all breast lumps are cancer.
If the cancer has spread beyond just the breasts and reached the lymph nodes, your armpits may swell. It can also happen near the collarbone. Get yourself checked if you feel any discomfort or swelling in or around your armpit.
A breast lump doesn’t usually hurt but inflammatory breast cancer can be painful. Normally a breast cancer is painless and most women with breast cancer do no experience pain. However, breast pain can also be due to some other non-cancerous reasons.
Breast cancer can make changes to the shape and size of your breasts. It can make it appear larger than usual. This can also happen to only one of your breasts. If you notice any changes in the shape and size of your breast, get screened.
Changes with the color, shape and size of the nipple can also be a symptom of breast cancer. The nipple may appear and feel different than usual. It can sink in the breasts or rashes can show up. It is also possible that your nipples release fluids which can have blood too.
