Post Covid Hair Loss

The second wave of pandemic might be receding, but people who recovered from the disease are increasingly experiencing post Covid-19 complications. Recurrent skin allergies, rashes, dry eyes, weakness and fatigue are some of the commonly reported post Covid-19 complications. But numerous patients are also observing an increased level of hair loss post Covid recovery. It is usually experienced by patients approximately after 30 days of the recovery, but in some patients it has been observed during the time of Covid-19 too, according to doctors at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi. “We have seen a two-fold rise in the number of patients complaining of problems related to hair loss,” said Dr Shahin Nooreyezdan, Senior Consultant, Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery, at the hospital. Losing hair can be worrisome and emotional for most people. Know the causes and when you should seek medical intervention.

Causes Of Hair Loss Post Covid-19

According to Dr Kuldeep, post Covid-19 inflammation has been a major contributor to this unexpected hair loss. Various deficiencies caused by a compromised nutritional intake, fever during the infection, weight loss, stress of suffering from the virus, associated anxiety, sudden hormonal changes and reduced vitamin D and B12 levels are some of the major reasons for the large volumes of hair loss post Covid-19, he said.  Also Read - Want to slow ageing? Losing 300-400 Hair Per Day Is A Sign Of Telogen Effluvium

Normally a person can lose up to 100 hair per day, but if it increases up to 300-400 hair per day, it could be due to a condition called Telogen Effluvium. This condition is now commonly seen in post Covid-19 patients, resulting in temporary hair loss.

Eat Nutritious Diet To Combat Hair Loss Post Covid Recovery

Dr Kuldeep advises patients recovering from Covid-19 to consume a nutritious diet along with natural edible sources of vitamins and iron. “There are two reasons to it, as iron deficiency can further accelerate the hair loss, and consumption of a protein rich and balanced diet can itself be a solution for reducing temporarily witnessed hair fall,” he said. He suggested to try some common hair care solutions to avoid an excessive hair loss such as: use of mild, paraben and sulphate free shampoos, keeping a close check on the itchy and flaky scalp, refraining from oiling and massaging the scalp, and using a wide tooth comb.  Also Read - Andhra Pradesh reports 12 COVID-19 cases, 4 deaths in three weeks; health department urges vigilance
