Have you ever wondered why health experts and doctors warn against eating white foods? It has nothing to do with the colour and more to do with what it represents. Most white foods (not all of them of course) are refined, processed and stripped of all its nutrients. These foods are responsible for causing a wide variety of health problems, like obesity, hypertension, diabetes and insulin insensitivity. Here is a list of five white food products you should avoid like the plague.
White flour or maida: This includes all the foods prepared from white flour like white bread, cakes, biscuits and pastries. When wheat flour is refined, the process strips the grains of their fibre, good fats, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, making it nutritionally empty as compared to flours made of whole grains. A diet rich in processed grains can cause increase in triglycerides and reduction of the good HDL.It can also cause insulin resistance during pregnancy and aggravate type 2 diabetes.
White rice: Rice is a staple in most Indian households. Some are so fond of eating rice that they can't imagine a single meal without it. Problem is that the rice that is served in most household is white rice which is stripped of its bran and germ. Studies have suggested that white rice consumption is connected to increase in type 2 diabetes. Those who can't do without rice, consider switching to brown or red rice.
Salt: Don't get us wrong. No one expects you to go off salt completely. In fact, that would be bad for your health. Without enough sodium and chloride, both of which are supplied by salt, your body will undergo an electrolyte imbalance. But too much salt can cause a sodium overdose, resulting in hypertension and damaged blood vessels, heart and kidneys. It weakens your bones and can even cause ulcers and cancer of the stomach.
White sugar: The biggest villain in the group of white foods is undoubtedly sugar. Processed and refined sugar has no redeeming quality whatsoever. With no health benefits, sugar causes a host of health issues like heart diseases, liver problems, insulin resistance, dental problems and cancer. It's loaded with empty calories that can make your weight loss goals go for a toss. It is highly addictive, making it difficult for the human brain to quit sugar completely.
White potatoes: Everybody's favourite sabzi has an evil side, which has bigger health implications that just weight gain. White potatoes are starchy and are on the carb-heavy side. Problem is that potatoes are enjoyed either deep fried or mashed with butter and cream, both of which can cause health hazards. Deep fried potatoes have been linked to cancers and increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
