Do you stock a bunch of coriander and mint every time you go for grocery shopping? If you need it every day, why not grow them at home, on your window sill. Moreover, by doing so, you can keep a tab on the fertilisers used and also the exposure to pollution, says Dr Neha Sanwalka, nutritionist and dietician. Here are six herbs you can easily grow at home.

Spring Onions

Spring onions: While you can grow spring onions from onion seeds, another simple method to grow spring onion is to use the bulb of spring onion, rehydrate the roots in water and then plant it in soil with manure for roots to grow into new plants. It takes around 2 weeks for the onion seeds to germinate and around 10 weeks to harvest.

Oregano

Oregano: Commonly used in the dried form, sprinkled on a pizza slice, oregano can also be grown at home. Oregano can be grown from seeds or cuttings, you need to mist them with water and cover the pot with plastic. Although it takes around 10 – 13 weeks to harvest, using fresh oregano in your food adds a unique flavour.

Lemongrass

Lemon grass: Although lemon grass seeds are available online, you can use the stalk of lemongrass to get a full grown plant within few months. Put the stalks in a glass of water till you see tiny roots sprouting. Now, put these stalks in soil and water regularly for a week. You will see new leaves, but it will take around 4 months for the plant to harvest.
