If you want to prevent diseases and live healthy, a balanced diet is a must. Our body does not just require nutrients; it needs them in the right proportion and in combination with other vitamins and minerals to function smoothly. Hence consuming a surplus of just proteins or some vitamins will not help. Here’s what a balanced diet should be like.

Carbohydrate Rich Food

Carbohydrates: These act like fuel for the body and brain. Hence, they must be part of every meal. Opt for complex carbohydrates like whole wheat, oats, bulgur, bajra, yam, potato and jaggery. Carbohydrates give you the feeling of satiety and energy required throughout the day. Protein Rich Food

Proteins: Also known as the building blocks of our body, proteins keep you active all day and help build muscle. They also aid in healing the regular wear and tear of the body. Egg, meat, poultry, fish, soy bean, soy, legumes, nuts and dals are good sources of protein and must be consumed regularly. About 2-3 servings of protein are a must for a balanced diet.

Fibre Rich Food

Fibre and vitamins: Foods rich in fibre help keep heart diseases at bay and help in smooth functioning of the digestive system. Fruits and vegetables are a complete source of fibre, vitamins, antioxidants and phytochemicals and must be included in large proportions in your everyday diet. Dairy

Dairy: These products are rich sources of calcium required for strengthening of bones and teeth. The calcium needs of the body increase as you age and are high during teenage too. Hence at least 2 portions of calcium rich foods like milk, curd, paneer, lassi, or cheese must be consumed daily. You need 2-3 servings per day of dairy.
