Do you really look after your brain? This organ is responsible for the overall functioning of your body and needs to be cared for. Forget about medications and head injury, things that you do daily can damage your brain in the long run.
Lack of sleep: When you sleep, your brain gets time to rest and reprogram its neurons for the next morning. However, if you have been sleep deprived, it affects your ability to focus, concentrate and coordinate. Also, a study by the University of California, San Diego revealed that lack of sleep affects the brain's functions, increasing your risk of brain problems as you age.
Skipping breakfast: There have been times when you tend to skip your breakfast and decide to eat a heavy lunch. But this causes your brain to receive less glucose and in turn make you feel tired, sluggish, irritable and moody. And over time, it might even affect your performance at school or work.
Overeating: When you overeat, especially junk food, your brain thinks that you are satiated and thus, doesn’t trigger signals, even if you are hungry. And over time, this causes tiredness and chronic fatigue affecting your brain's ability to function properly.
Not drinking enough water: It is a known fact that lack of water leads to dehydration. But, it might cause light-headedness and low response time, that in turn might lead to shrinking of the brain tissue. If you have been drinking less than 8 glasses of water daily, increase your intake to prevent brain damage.
Multitasking: Who said multitasking is good for your brain? The researchers from Stanford University revealed that people who multi-task showed reduced efficiency and performance as compared to those who do one thing at a time.
Smoking: When you smoke, numerous harmful chemicals are released in the body that in turn thickens your blood. This hinders the blood supply to the brain, further increasing your risk of various mental problems.
Stress: The body releases cortisone hormone when you are stressed, which harms your brain, says a study was published in the Journal of Neuroscience. You should practice meditation and yoga to be stress-free and prevent brain damage.
