Endometriosis Diet

Endometriosis is a long-term disease in which the tissue that normally lines the uterus starts to grow outside of the uterus causing pain in the pelvis, painful periods, bloating and bowel problems. Healthcare professionals note that even though medical treatment continues deciding to eat a healthy diet could help some women alleviate symptoms while maintaining optimal health. Here are some foods to include and limit for individuals struggling with the chronic medical condition:

Eat Fewer Ultra-processed And Trans-fat Foods

Avoid too many fried foods, commercially baked foods and trans fats by choosing minimally processed foods instead. In observational studies women with high consumption of trans fats have a higher risk of developing endometriosis.

Eat More Green Leafy Vegetables

Green vegetables like spinach, kale, broccoli and other greens are high in fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Some evidence has found that women who consume more vegetables may have a lower risk for developing endometriosis but it is not conclusive and does not mean that eating vegetables prevents or treats the condition. Also Read - Is it endometriosis or adenomyosis? Add Omega-3 Rich Foods

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fatty fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, walnuts, chia seeds and flaxseeds. According to healthcare professionals these healthy fats can be used to promote an anti-inflammatory eating plan. Additionally some studies indicates that increased consumption of polyunsaturated fats may be helpful for endometriosis pain but more comprehensive research is required.

Limit Red And Processed Meat

Eating red meat particularly processed meat can be something to consider limiting. In a systematic review there was a correlation between risk of developing endometriosis and consumption of red meat but this did not prove that red meat causes endometriosis. As of now there is no scientifically proven diet for endometriosis. Therefore focus on a balanced eating pattern that includes more vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, minimally processed foods and whole grains. You can also speak to your doctor or registered dietitian about a special eating plan if certain foods cause bloating, bowel trouble or pain.
