You can save a life by knowing the first-aid measures to administer on a person having an epileptic attack. Here are the steps.
The first and important step as soon as you see a person experiencing seizures is to stay calm and not panic.
Secondly, loosen the collar or any scarf or clothing around the neck to ensure that the person can breathe properly.
You might injure the person if you try to hold him/her down. All you need to do is hold the person to prevent him/her from falling down.
As the person might be unconscious during an epileptic attack, remove sharp objects like glasses or even furniture from the vicinity to protect the person from injury.
Always cushion the person’s head with a soft pillow or blanket to provide support to the head.
Ensure that the person is not lying on the stomach but on the back to avoid suffocation.
After the seizure, lay the person on their side (known as recovery position) and check if the person is breathing properly.
If the seizure lasts for more than three minutes or if the person experiences a second attack just after the first one, you should call a doctor or seek medical help immediately.
Stay with the person for a few minutes until he/she recovers fully.
Also, speak calmly to the person and make sure they are comfortable as they might be a little confused and disoriented after the attack.
Avoid putting anything in their mouth and don't give them food or anything to drink immediately after the attack, as it might affect their breathing and worsen the condition.
