We use masks to protect ourselves from polluted air, which gets worse during winters. But have you ever wondered how pollution has a nasty effect on the eyes as well? Our expert Dr Rahul Ali, Country Director, Orbis, India sheds light on how pollution affects your eyes.

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis: Usually caused due to a viral or bacterial infection, conjunctivitis can also be caused due to dust and pollution, which leads to irritation of the eyes. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva in the eye, which is characterised by red eyes and swollen eyelids.

Light Sensitivity

Light sensitivity: As pollutants can affect your eyes including cornea and iris, it can lead to increased sensitivity to bright light along with discomfort. In some cases, it can also lead to blurry vision, which usually subsides within some time.

Eye Infection

Eye infections: Photochemical smog which is packed with hazardous chemicals not only causes eye irritation and damages the eyes, but also put you at risk of eye infections.
