Oil Massages

Oil massages are a complete no-no if you have folliculitis. This is because oils can block the openings of your hair follicles and cause further irritation and infection. If your symptoms of folliculitis have subsided, remember to go for an oil massage only after taking a bath so the bacteria doesn't spread even further, says Dr Shetty. Also Read - Eating after 9 pm? Waxing

Using hot wax to get rid of unwanted hair is not recommended because in most cases the strips and knife used for waxing aren't adequately sterilized. This can worsen the infection and aggravate folliculitis.

Shaving

While you're undergoing treatment for folliculitis, dermatologists actually recommend patients not to shave or wax. Shaving can also spread the infection and cause more ingrown hairs which makes your skin itchy and results in more boils and rashes. As far as possible, avoid trying to get rid of unwanted hair on the affected areas. If you can afford it, Dr Shetty suggests laser hair removal for those who suffer from folliculitis. Also Read - Has Ebola already entered India? Avoid Touching The Affected Areas

When the pus dries out from the boils and rashes, your skin can become itchy. However, avoid touching the affected areas if you don't want your skin to flare up again. If your skin feels sensitive and itchy, consult your dermatologist for a lotion that has soothing properties.

Don't Apply Petroleum Jelly

You might have read about how petroleum jelly can be good in moisturizing your skin. However, completely avoid using this product if your skin is prone to breakouts. Since it is very heavy and thick, it will only block your hair follicles and spread the infection. Instead, switch to a lighter moisturizer with aloe vera.
