It is obvious that lack of sleep at night can turn you sleepy during the day, especially at work. But do you know about the non-obvious yet common things that can cause daytime sleepiness?
Obesity – Obese people feel overly tired due to the production of cytokines, immune cells, which in turn trigger sleepiness. To kick that off, exercise at least five times a week.
Depression – When depressed, you take longer to fall asleep or wake up often in the middle of the night that makes you sleep during the day. Practise yoga (to relieve stress), stay away from depression-triggering foods or go for counselling.
High-fat diet – Eat a high-fat diet at work? You are bound to get sleepy because increased fat consumption affects alertness. Replace it with a high-carbohydrate diet as it increases your alertness and makes you productive at work.
Fragile bones – A study that appeared in the journal Cell Metabolism blamed orexin proteins (promote and block bone formation) for daytime sleepiness. So check your BMD (bone mineral density) levels and eat foods rich in calcium for better bone health.
Post-pregnancy – New mums face difficulty in sleeping during the night as they keep waking up to attend to their baby, which makes them sleepy and tired at work. To cope with this, try to get an extended maternity leave. Soon-to-be mums, are you listening?
