You probably gorge on almonds and walnuts to keep your memory sharp. But, did you know that poor lifestyle choices and certain health conditions can cause a sharp decline in your brain health?
Hypertension: According to a paper presented at the American Heart Association’s 2015 High Blood Pressure Conference in Washington, people suffering from hypertension have damaged nerve tracts connecting different parts of the brain and are prone to diseases like dementia.
Obesity: Being overweight is characterised by reduced levels of a molecule called N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA), that is associated with both, appetite control and nerve cell health in the hippocampus. It is a part of the brain associated with memory, learning and emotions. The study was published in the journal Neuroimage Clinical.
Lack of sleep: According to a study published in the journal 'Sleep', poor sleepers or insomniacs find it difficult to concentrate on their daily tasks during the day. They also find it challenging to remember things and have delayed reaction time.
Hearing loss: According to a study, people with impaired hearing lost more than an additional cubic centimetre of brain tissue as compared to those with normal hearing. The study claimed that hearing loss accelerates brain shrinkage and degeneration. The research was conducted at Johns Hopkins University and the National Institute on Aging in the US.
Multi-tasking: Researchers believe that people who multi-task are unable to pay attention and recall information accurately as compared to those who concentrate on one task at a time. The study was conducted at Stanford University.
