January 30th is Anti-leprosy Day. Leprosy, if not detected at the initial stage can lead to physical deformity. Caused due to a virus, here are eight common signs of leprosy that you should keep in mind, says Krishnakant Debri, Senior Family Physician, Mumbai.
The most common sign of a person suffering from leprosy is loss of lateral eyebrows, which comprises 1/3rd of the eyebrows.
The next visible symptom of leprosy is the presence of thickened nerves at or around the elbow region.
Most people also have an anaesthetic patch, which is a whitish patch on the skin that is insensitive to touch or sensation. You even fail to feel any heat, cold or pin pricks.
In some cases, appearance of red spots on the skin which are lighter than the normal tone of the skin also indicate leprosy.
Numbness in the finger or toes caused due to nerve infection also indicates leprosy. At later stage, it can lead to lack of sensation in the hands and feet and physical deformities.
Loss of strength in the hands and feet due to nerve damage which causes difficulty in holding things.
Weakness of eye lids that causes loss of difficulty in blinking the eyelids. It is due to the attack of the virus on the nerves in the eyes.
In some cases, even respiratory infection that leads to damage to the mucosal lining of the nose can cause leprosy.
