Men ejaculate millions and millions of sperms during a sexual act. But only the lucky one unites with the egg and fertilises it to produce a baby. They have an interesting lifespan: Unlike women who have a set number of eggs in their ovaries, sperms are produced in the testicles throughout the lifespan. Once ejaculated, they can stay inside the woman’s body for up to five days, on a dry surface they die once the semen dries, if ejaculated in a warm tub, the sperms can keep floating for hours.

Not all sperms are equal: More than 90 percent of the sperms that are produced are defective. However, this doesn’t indicate that the man is infertile. In fact, in the race of reaching to the egg, millions of sperm lose the race, and only a few healthy ones can reach it. This is nature’s way of ensuring only the healthiest lot reach the egg, and the mightier one unites with the egg.

It takes time to form a sperm: Though men have a constant supply of sperm, it takes months for the sperms to mature. On an average, it takes around 46 to 72 days for healthy sperms to mature and get ready for fertilisation. But you don’t have to worry, even while you ejaculate, a fresh batch of sperms is already getting ready for the next act.

It comes in both genders: Yes it is the sperm that decides the sex of your baby. Some sperms have X chromosomes (female), and others have Y chromosome (male). According to researchers from Harvard University, the female sperms are longer than male sperms and so the likelihood of reaching the egg before the male sperm is more. However, nothing can control the sex of the child.

One testicle produces enough sperms: While a man has two testicles which produce both sperm and semen, having one testicle wouldn’t affect one’s fertility either.

Sperm is cold: While you are heating up things under the sheet, your sperm maintains its cool. This is because they are seven degrees less that your body temperature as your testicles maintains this temperature to keep your sperms healthy and fit.
