Stress: Hypothalamus, an area in your brain where a lot of hormones for your periods are regulated gets affected due to stress. So if you are dealing with a break-up or death in the family or any other life event, the stress could be the cause of your late period or missed period.
Thyroid disorder: A thyroid imbalance whether it is hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism can delay your periods. So if you notice any symptom of thyroid disease, be sure to check with your doctor.
Chronic disease: Any chronic illness like Celiac disease (characterised by lactose intolerance) that is left undiagnosed or untreated can impact the functioning of your general bodily systems and result in delayed periods.
Birth control pill: Missing or late period can also be the side effect of a birth control pill that you have taken. It can also be a result of other methods like hormonal IUDs, implants or even shots.
Premature menopause: This is not very common, but some women under 40 have early menopause which is also known as a premature ovarian failure. Along with missing period signs of premature menopause include night sweats, hot flashes and vaginal dryness.
PCOS: PCOS, a hormonal imbalance can cause irregular periods. Hair growth on face and chest, potential fertility issues and difficulty in losing weight are some of the other symptoms of PCOS.
