Frequent stools: How often do you empty your bowel? Although once a day is normal, in some even twice or thrice a day doesn’t indicate any health problem. However, running to the wash room frequently could be a sign of diarrhoea.
Watery or liquid stools: Yes, you guessed it right? It indicates that you might be suffering from diarrhoea and thus, need to check your food intake. While BRAT (banana, rice, apple and toast) diet might help, consult a doctor if it lasts for more than two days.
Hard stools: Inadequate water consumption and less intake of fibre might be the cause. Constipation (hard stools) also indicate a thyroid problem. So don’t ignore hard stools and visit your doctor at the earliest.
Green stools: Your stools should be light brown in colour. If they are green, it means that the food you eat is digested too quickly. It can also be due to the intake of green leafy vegetables in your diet.
Yellow stools: Greasy and foul smelling yellow stools means there’s a problem with digestion or fat malabsorption (celiac disease). It can also be due to a problem with your liver, pancreas or gall bladder.
Blood stained stools: Blood in your poop could be due to a cancer, ulcerative colitis, haemorrhoids (piles) or rectal bleeding.
Black stools: If you are taking iron supplements, your stools might be black. However, it could also indicate an ulcer of the gastro-intestinal tract or sometimes even cancer.
White or pale stools: The colour of your stool depends on the presence of bile pigment and thus, white or pale stools indicate a lack of bile. This might signify hepatitis, pancreatic disorders or cirrhosis of liver. Antacids also cause white stools.
Foul-smelling stools: In adults, foul-smelling stools might indicate celiac disease or Crohn’s disease. And if your kid’s poop has bad odour, it could be due to worms in stomach (an infection).
