Boswellia or Indian frankincense: This is an Ayurvedic herb that is derived from the resin of the plant and has been used in traditional Indian practices to treat UC. Researchers have found that 900 mg of this herb given thrice a day for a period of 6 weeks can help UC patients [1].
Slippery Elm: This is a supplement that is derived from the powdered bark of the slippery elm tree. Due to its anti-oxidant effects, it has been found to be effective in improving symptoms caused by UC [2]. Consult an Ayurveda practitioner to get the right dosage.
Tormentil extracts: These extracts are derived from the roots of a plant called Potentilla erecta. A study found that 2400 mg of tormentil extracts a day for four weeks was effective in providing UC patients some relief [3].
Germinated barley: This herbal remedy can reduce rectal bleeding and diarrhea caused by ulcerative colitis when combined with conventional therapy and can also prolong remission in patients with the disease [4]. You can take 20 g of germinated barley a day for some added relief.
