2015 was a year of controversies, most of them revolving around food. A few broke our hearts and a few just made us smirk! Here's a list of the top food fiascoes.

Insects in Patanjali Atta Noodles -- Patanjali noodles was launched in the wake of India's favourite instant noodle brand, Maggi, being banned in the country. However, Baba Ramdev's promise of providing the country with a healthier version of Maggi failed immediately. First, they did not have a valid FSSAI licence and now, a man from Haryana has found insects in a sealed packet of Patanjali Atta Noodles.

Contaminated Ching's Secret noodles -- Ching's Secret noodles were also under the FDA scanner after ingredients like guar gum and sodium bicarbonate were found in three samples collected. The FSSAI does not these ingredients in instant noodles. After a case was lodged against the manufacturer, there have been no developments yet.

Fungus in Tropicana juice --Vishwas Pai posted this rather disgusting picture on Facebook. He found a black fungus-like substance in a tetra pack of Tropicana mixed fruit delight. He also wrote on Facebook that his mother fell ill and threw up twice after drinking this juice. There has been no reaction/ explanation from the brand so far.

KFC serves fried rat instead of chicken -- Deveroise Dixon from California, USA posted a picture on Facebook saying that KFC served him fried rodent instead of a fried chicken. However, KFC quickly released a statement saying that the man was refusing to cooperate with the investigation that proved that he intended to mislead the public by his hoax.

Worms in KFC's Zinger burger -- KFC also was in the new when a couple from Mangalore, halfway through the meal, found worms in their Zinger Burger. Their complaints were not taken seriously by the staff and according to reports, they were not even allowed to take pictures of the worm infested burger. However, KFC reacted by saying that the couple was satisfied with the safety of the food after they were given a tour of the kitchen.

Adulterated Mother Dairy milk--According to some reports, two samples of Mother Dairy milk were found to be substandard and one of them was found to contain detergent. However, Mother Dairy stood by its quality and denied that their product was substandard ,stating that their product undergoes strict quality control and if any sample is found to be adulterated, it is rejected immediately.

Beef Ban-- The Maharashtra government banned the sale or possession of beef in the state from the month of March. The move received a lot of flak from people across the country, but there was nothing anyone could do about it. The law that passed under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Bill, 1995, bans the slaughter of bulls and bullocks in the state and punishment for the sale or possession of beef is a prison for five years with an additional fine of Rs 10,000.

Maggi Ban-- One fine June morning, the country woke to up this sad news that its favourite instant noodle brand, Maggi was unsafe for consumption as it has lead and MSG content way above the permissible limit. The controversy got murkier as samples across the country were tested. However, most of them had lead and MSG in permissible limits. Still, the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India made sure that the noodles were banned in the country and thousands of Maggi noodles packets were mercilessly destroyed. Three months later, the ban was lifted. Maggi noodles, hands down, takes the 'Comeback of the Year 2015' award!
