The whole Maggi controversy with lead content beyond permissible limits got me thinking, and I wanted to know if we are exposed to lead in any other form. Here are a few everyday things that may contain lead.
Drinking water: It's pretty shocking, but lead pipes and plumbing used for supplying drinking water could lead to poisoning due to corrosion.
Kohl or Kajal: Yes that pretty black liner you use to enhance your eyes may also contain lead. So check the label next time you go to purchase your favourite brand of kajal!
Scorpios (October 23 – November 21) Power Red: For the most overtly sensual and confident sign of the zodiac, an intensely shiny, sexy, full-bodied red is a must! This fiercely hot colour will bring out your unabashed, unapologetic and naughty side at its best!
Paints: The paints that you use to add colour to your homes may contain high levels of lead. And when the paint starts chipping, and there is dust everywhere, and you breathe in the lead.
Ceramic dishes: Do you eat your meals in plates coated with ceramic glaze or are hand painted? Well, you are putting your health at risk then. Ceramic glaze is made of lead and eating acidic foods or drinks in ceramic wear can leach lead into the food and increase your exposure.
Vegetables: Yes, this was quite a shocker. Vegetables that are cultivated or grown on soil that is contaminated with lead dust are full of lead, and when we eat them, it enters our system. However, no proper washing or cooking technique can rid of this lead exposure.
Fish: Industrial waste products often contain lead, and when this effluent is let out into oceans and other water bodies without prior treatment, lead enters these marine animals. And when we eat them, it enters our body.
Toys: Those brightly coloured toys, the ones that are your child's favourite may also have lead. And if you buy toys at traffic signals, and your child puts it in his mouth often, there are more chances of suffering from lead poisoning. Watch out for such toys and make sure you buy branded toys that are lead-free.
