Just like stroke or infection in the brain, there are no specific symptoms of brain tumour. Right from headache to seizures, there are some signs you need to be aware of so you can seek timely help says Sudhir Kumar, senior consultant neurologist, Institute of Neurosciences, Hyderabad.

Headache: Although headache is a common symptom, if it is frequent, severe during the morning or the severity increases with time, it might indicate brain tumour. So it’s better to consult a doctor to know the underlying cause of the condition.

Nausea: A common cause of indigestion or uneasiness, nausea can be a sign of brain tumour. If you experience headache or weakness along with nausea, then it is wise to visit your doctor as symptoms of brain tumour remain hidden for years.

Vomiting: If you experience nausea or vomiting first thing in the morning, then better beware (unless you are pregnant) especially when it is accompanied by weakness or loss of sensation.

Hearing difficulty: In some cases, difficulty in hearing or hearing loss is also seen as a late sign of brain tumour. So if you fail to know to exact cause of this, consult a doctor immediately.

Vision problems: A common vision problem that people suffering from brain tumour experience is double vision due to lack of nervous coordination. In some cases, blurry vision is also seen.

Speech difficulty: You can also experience difficulty in speaking or slurred speech in the case of brain tumour. This is caused when the tumour is located at the back of the brain.

Weakness in the arms and legs: Depending upon the location of the tumour in the brain, you might experience weakness in the arms or legs. If the tumour affects the right part of the brain, it can lead to weakness in the left arm and leg and vice versa.

Confusion: People suffering from brain tumour may exhibit confusion, especially during the later stage of the condition. It could be trouble understanding sounds, sights and what others are trying to say, which could make them anxious, upset or aggressive.

Postural imbalance: A tumour in the back of the brain leading to imbalance and difficulty while walking.

Seizures: Although a common sign of brain tumour, seizures are mostly seen in the case of the tumour affecting a part of the cerebral cortex, outermost part of the brain tissue. Your doctor might recommend an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan to know the exact cause of seizures.
