Symptoms of epilepsy occur depending on the functioning of the brain where excessive neuronal discharge is produced. Also, these symptoms can vary from person to person depending on the type of seizures. Dr Vinod Puri, Senior Director, Department of Neurology & Head, Comprehensive Epilepsy Service, Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket explains the signs and symptoms of epilepsy.
Staring spells: A common symptom of absence seizure, in this the patient experiences a brief episode of staring spells. It is caused due to disturbance of brain function following an electrical imbalance in the brain.
Loss of alertness: The abnormal activity spreads to the other parts of the brain causing confusion and loss of alertness. It impairs the normal functioning of the brain.
Strange sensation: In some cases, minutes before you experience an epileptic seizure, there is a strange sensation indicating that something is not right. It is a sudden feeling that could be uneasiness in the upper abdomen, a feeling of fear or a hallucination.
Seizures: It happens when only a small part of the brain is affected. You will not lose consciousness but will experience an alteration in senses, dizziness and tingling in the limbs. However, some can lead to unconsciousness, increasing the risk of injuries.
