What do you do when you notice a skin rash or discolouration in a certain area of your skin? You may apply a lotion or ignore it once, but these symptoms may also be indicative of a skin problem. To help you out, we bring you the symptoms of most common skin problems so that you can tell your dermatologist at the right time.

Hives appear as a sudden outbreak of red bumps or swelling on the skin. It usually starts as an itchy rash that turn into a swollen red patch on the skin. They can appear anywhere on the skin including your tongue and lips. They last for several hours or a day and usually do not require treatment.

Purpura also known as blood spots refers to the purple-coloured spots recognisable on the skin. It is caused by internal bleeding of small blood vessels. Visit your physician if you notice those purple rashes on your skin.

Moles are usually visible as black or brown growth on the skin. They are circular in shape but could be flat and a little raised. They typically don’t change in appearance for months but if there is a change in the shape or colour of the mole, you should immediately consult a dermatologist.

Skin pigmentations are dark spots on the skin that are common in both men and women. A number of factors like hormonal imbalance, prolonged exposure to the sun, wrong skin care products and skin bleaching can lead to skin pigmentation. Visit your dermatologist if you notice pigmentations for treatments that can help lighten them.

The appearance of a ring-shaped rash with a clear centre area is one of the most visible symptoms of the fungal infection ringworm. The patch may be filled with pus or develop scales and crust. Usually, the application of an anti-fungal cream is sufficient for treating the lesions but medication may be required if there are multiple lesions in the body.

Freckles are small brown spots commonly found on face and arms. Genetics and exposure to the sun cause freckles. You can use face packs at home to lighten the freckles; however it is best to get in touch with a dermatologist to get rid of them.

Skin tags are common soft, small skin growths. A person may get anything between one to hundred skin tags. They are harmless but if you want to get rid of them, consult your dermatologist. They are treatments like freezing and cutting off the skin tag.

Tinea versicolor is a fungal infection characterised by a white patch on your skin that do not tan like the rest of your skin does. They commonly occur on the neck, chest back and arms. Your doctor can diagnose the condition and give you creams and lotions to treat it.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition characterised by dry and itchy skin with silvery scales. If your nails are affected, it might appear thicker than normal with a brownish-yellow tinge. Visit your doctor if you have any of these symptoms as psoriasis cannot be cured but can be treated.
