A concussion is a mild head injury which usually doesn't cause any external brain damage or internal bleeding. However, if you bleed from the ears or nose, lose consciousness or suffer convulsion following a head injury, consult a doctor as it might indicate brain injury and not a concussion, says Dr Pradip Shah, Consultant Physician, Fortis Hospital, Mumbai. Here are signs of a concussion that you need to know.

Headache: One of the first and most common symptoms you might experience after a head injury or banging your head on a door, wall or person is a headache. In some cases, you could just feel a slight pressure in the head after the injury.

Vomiting: It seems that one in 10 adults or children experience vomiting at least once after a head injury. Vomiting commonly follows head injury and doesn't indicate brain injury. However, repeated vomiting is a cause of concern and need urgent medical attention.

Confusion: A psychological symptom, confusion could be due to a slight disturbance in the neurological circuit following a head injury. Hence, confusion or feeling as if in a fog is a common sign of a concussion.

Ringing in the ears: As the neurological circuit is slightly disturbed, in some cases, you might even experience ringing sensation in the ears following a head injury. However, this usually subsides within few minutes. If not, then consult a doctor immediately.

Dizziness: As seen in most of the health problems, dizziness is also a common symptom of a concussion. This is because, as you hit on the head, it is common to experience this symptom. However, if you feel too dizzy or have a severe headache, consult a doctor immediately.
