Men are far less affected by UTI infections than women. However, there could be a number of reasons that could lead to a UTI in men. ‘UTI in men is usually characterized by frequent urination, burning sensation, severe pain during urination, fever, irritability and general discomfort that isn’t easy to express,’ says Dr Anup Ramani, Uro-oncological Robotic surgeon, Mumbai.

STD infection: A common cause of UTI in younger men is an underlying STD infection. A UTI is usually caused due to bacteria and STDs can be due to a bacterial invasion that can give rise to symptoms like frequent urination, burning sensation, pain during urination among other symptoms.

Bladder and urethra infection: Bladder infection or cystitis, urethra infection or urethritis or even kidney infections could lead to UTIs in men.

Prostate problems: Usually an enlarged prostate is a reason for a severe UTI infection in men aged 50 and above. When the prostate enlarges and presses on the bladder, it is unable to empty the bladder completely. Urine that gets trapped changes its chemical composition and leads to bacteria build up and then a UTI.

Kidney stones: In both young and elderly men kidney stones can lead to a UTI. This is because stones are known to help the bacteria thrive in the moist environment which is notorious for leading to UTI.

Diabetes: This condition doesn’t cause UTI directly, though is associated with frequent urination. However, suffering from diabetes makes one prone to UTI.

Use of antibiotics: Certain medications can cause UTIs like antibiotics which can disrupt the bacterial build up in the urine and bowel regions leading to an UTI.
